The Third Global SME Summit held in Shanghai

On November 28th, 2017, the Third Global SME Summit was held in the Grand Hall (Red Hall) of Shanghai Expo Center.

With ‘New Dynamism, New Journey’ as the subject, the summit covered topics ranging from the world economic outlook and China’s new era of modernization, the restructuring and business upgrading, world trends in artificial intelligence and corporate social responsibility. Over 2,600 participants from manufacturing, financial, information technology and e-commerce, real estate, service sectors attended the summit.

President Obama delivered a keynote speech during the summit. In his opinion, our world is now at an inflection point. On the one hand, we are facing more pressure on every aspect. On the other hand, those aspects have seen accelerating development due to social revolution, globalization and technological advancements. Challenges also come along with the prosperity brought about by the development. Regarding Sino-U.S. relations, President Obama mentioned that it was the most important bilateral relation around the world. The economic integration of China is not only in the interest of China, but of the U.S. and the rest of the world. It is necessary and required for United States to welcome China as a prosperous, peaceful and stable country. America, therefore, should encourage China to undertake more responsibilities and promote the establishment of an orderly international system.

During the dialogue session with Jeff Cao, Deputy Secretary-General of GASME, President Obama pointed out that economic development would be inhibited by environmental pollution and it would never be too early to consider environmental protection no matter for a developing or a developed country. President Obama warned that developing countries should not repeat the mistakes made by developed countries in leveraging development and environmental protection. When asked about future strategies that Chinese enterprises should adopt, President Obama believes that actions should be taken to reduce dependence on manufacturing industry and exports to ensure sustainable development. At the same time, he encourages people to consume in a sustainable manner and go out of the habit of saving rather than spending when a developed social security system comes into being. During the conversation, President Obama also acknowledges the role played by SMEs in China’s economy and he suggests Chinese government and major companies build platforms for SMEs to facilitate their development and generate a more robust economy.

Christian Wulff, Global Chairman of GASME and former President of Germany also gave his speech, in which he mentioned that industrial advancements in Germany is owing to the integration and united development of SMEs and multinational businesses, in which GASME played an important role. Chairman Wulff expects that, with the establishment of Global Alliance of Business Organizations (GABO), more business opportunities will be created for closer cooperation among global business organizations. In addition, Chairman Wulff expressed his disapproval of trade protectionism and appealed to China, the U.S. and European countries to cooperate in the opposition to trade protectionism.

He Weiwen, Vice Chairman of GASME and former Commercial Counselor of Consulate-General of PRC in New York, anticipates that emerging technologies and the forth industrial revolution to come are very likely to restructure the economy in the following two decades. Thus, he urged enterprises to adapt to such changes and make breakthroughs. SMEs, as the backbone of our economy, are expected to prepare themselves to follow the trend, cooperate in a wider and greater context and make new history.

Wei Jianguo, former Vice Minister of Commerce predicted that Chinese privately-owned enterprises would become the main force of the Belt and Road Initiative in the next five years. China’s rise and revitalization will not succeed without the support from SMEs. To go abroad, Chinese privately-owned enterprises require policy negotiation, facility implementation, trade facilitation, financial circulation and people-to-people communication. The government should build platforms and lay solid foundations for these enterprises. Enterprises need to frequently examine themselves and actively integrate with global economy.

Foreign policy expert Yang Jiemian, member of Foreign Policy Advisory Group, explored current international situation and China’s historical responsibilities in his keynote speech. He maintains that we are now in a critical period of revolution, development and adjustment. In the past, China played a relatively passive role in foreign affairs. However, the situation started to change after the global financial crisis in 2008 and Chinese people now are able to make a difference and change the world with 3 major diplomatic achievements attained so far. Professor Yang believes, despite the inevitably painful process, both countries and companies will succeed if they remain steadfast and dedicated.

Kong Tao, member of Standing Committee of the CPC Hefei Municipal Committee and Deputy Mayor of Hefei, presented how fast Hefei had evolved from an ancient business center to a modern intelligent city. He also showed his strong interest in collaborating with entrepreneurs from all walks of life to build Hefei into a stronger and more beautiful city and together embrace a brighter future.

Frank Cao, Secretary-General of GASME, showed his determination to serve not only Chinese enterprises but also enterprises from the U.S., EU, Africa, Southeast Asia and so forth. From his perspective, to develop in the global context, Chinese enterprises need to go abroad in groupwith shared resources and reduced costs. Frank also believes that Chinese enterprises need to cooperate with developed countries to develop the market of third parties, spot new economic growth point and invigorate global economy. Moreover, to support implementation of the Belt and Road initiative, GASME will establish GABO to unite millions of business organizations and promote communication and connectivity.

Wang Zhenghua, President of Spring Airlines, shared his thoughts on how to be a great business owner. He encourages entrepreneurs to think and act with integrity. To achieve such aim, firstly, entrepreneurs need to be self-reliant and target at creating value for the society. Secondly, entrepreneurs should give more and take less, because they can actually achieve more through such behaviors. Thirdly, entrepreneurs should always act in a thrifty manner.

Zheng Yonggang, Chairman of Shanghai Entrepreneur Association and Chairman of Shanshan Holdings, revealed that more value would be created if a company could strive to solve social problems and take the welfare of the society into account during its operation. Chairman Zheng added that every entrepreneur should question themselves about their initial thoughts on founding the companies. This is because only after finding the deeply-rooted driving force and acting upon it will their companies thrive in the long run.

Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman of Hurun Report, with an attractive and humorous tone, shared his experience in founding the Hurun Report. He not only talked about anecdotes and innovation capabilities of some of the entrepreneurs listed in the Report, but also made big compliments on the entrepreneurship exhibited by successful business women. Owing his success to the alumni community, Rupert Hoogewerf also shared his thoughts on how to become successful. In his opinion, one should carefully select an industry and then, with sufficient financial and manpower support, develop in a fast and innovative way.

Gui Guojie, CEO of Shanghai Cred Real Estate Stock Co., Ltd, Wang Junhao, President of JuneYao Group and Wang Hongxin, Chairman of Shanghai Wahaha Fuli Network Co., Ltd participated in the entrepreneur dialogue session. Subjects of the dialogue include but are not limited to opportunities and challenges rising from the Belt and Road initiative, supply-side reform, Made in China 2025 and Targeted Poverty Alleviation.

Up to date, GASME has successfully held three Global SME Summits. President Clinton was invited to the first summit kicked off on November 17th, 2013. President Obama attended the third summit this year.
