GASME Chairman Visits China's Ministry of Industry

On June 28, 2010, Mr. Carlos Magarinos, the Honorary Global Chairman of the Global Alliance of SMEs (GASME) visited the SME Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in Beijing. Wang Liming, Director General of the Department, received Mr. Magarinos and his delegation. The two parties had in in-depth conversation regarding international cooperation and the development of Chinese SMEs.

After expressing his appreciation for Mr. Magarinos’ efforts to enhance co-operation between Chinese and foreign SMEs, Mr. Wang stated that “SMEs in every country create a large number of economic entities and many job opportunities. In China, SMEs comprise of 99.7% of all enterprises, create 75% of all jobs, and contribute 74% of industry output value, 59% of total wholesale and retail, 55% of GDP, 52% of total exports and 46% of tax revenue. SMEs have undoubtedly been a major factor in the growth of China’s economy.” Mr. Wang also expressed his concerns about the future of Chinese SMEs: “In a post-crisis era, Chinese SMEs find themselves in a crucial role of upgrading and transformation. Therefore, a core concern of the SME Department is to encourage more Chinese SMEs to step into the global market. My department, therefore, welcomes international exchange and co-operation between GASME and local governments, with the common goal of enhancing the core competitiveness of Chinese SMEs. My department would also like to help recommend and promote successful practice” said Mr. Wang.


Mr. Magarinos also agreed with multilayered international co-operations among multilateral institutions, government and non-governmental organizations in a post-crisis era. He stated that public goods are necessities in any country, and it had become the common view of governments worldwide that public goods played a vital role in enhancing social cohesion and improving economic competitiveness. Mr. Magarinos hoped that, with the support of SME Department, more Chinese SMEs would join the “SME Global EZPath Program” and consequently enjoy its benefits and convenience.

In an open and friendly atmosphere, many agreements were reached, with both parties’ willingness to maintain close communication and enhance co-operation so as to effectively promote the healthy, steady and sustainable development of Chinese SMEs.
